Uważaj na Maske Wolności (Beware the Mask of Freedom)

Stencil piece created during Katowice Street-Art Festival in Poland, 2012. Katowice has a long history of being a mining/worker town, and it is a history that many of its residents still take pride in. In 2012, Poland had only just recently joined the EU, and received rather large sums of money for large scale renovation projects, which could be seen in Katowice during my stay. Old buildings were being renovated to welcome a new class of gentrifiers, large malls were being erected and a great many billboards boasted the attire of Adidas and H&M. This stencil, a reworked version of the first Mask of Freedom image I created in Cairo, is my response.
