The Guy Fawkes mask popularized by the film V For Vendetta was already becoming a popular sight in the protests of Cairo at this point. Combining the mask with the headdress of Tutankhamun created an Egyptian-specific icon of rebellion. The eye-patch is reference to the “battle of Mohammed Mahmoud street”, 6 continuous days of clashes between protestors and central security forces that saw many protestors lose their eyes.
